CRERPA: GIS / Maps

A Geographic Information System is a computerized information or relational database management system that is designed to analyze data that can be linked to a location on the face of the earth.

For the region and its municipalities, GIS has the ability to translate and analyze cadastral, environmental, census, infrastructure, emergency and law enforcement data into visual models of the real world they represent. The real world models, or maps, are powerful visual tools that enable better decision making in regards to planning for land use, transportation, hazard mitigation, and emergency preparedness. They are what separate GIS from other database management systems.
